How to: Create smoky eyes
by Gladys Chung

A dramatic smoky eye is an alluring look that is perfect for the party season.

Think French actress Berenice Marlohe's smouldering gaze in the latest Bond movie, Skyfall.

Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) Beaute's national make-up artist, Angus Lee, for Taiwan shows you how to get the look.

Product recommendations from Mr Lee and Urban.

Step 1: Prep skin with a pearlescent moisturiser for a glow.

Try: Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) Forever Youth Liberator Creme, $139 for 50ml, from B2-34 Ion Orchard; or Nars Aqua Gel Luminous Oil-Free Moisturizer, $85, from Nars in Tangs Orchard.

Step 2: Apply a liquid highlighter all over eyelids and the brow bone area to make them stand out.

Try: YSL Touche Eclat, or Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener, $55, from Bobbi Brown counters.

Step 3: Brush liquid foundation on the face for a more polished look. Then add another layer of liquid highlighter on the undereye area and cheekbones.

Try: Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup foundation, $58 (photo 2), from Estee Lauder counters; or Lancome Teint Miracle foundation, $66 (photo 3), from Lancome counters.

Step 4: Draw brows and apply mascara. These steps frame the face so you can apply eye colours more precisely.

Step 5: Use a black gel eyeliner that is easy to blend as a bold shadow base. Line the upper lashline and apply the gel liner all over the eyelid from the upper lashline to just above the crease.

Using a dense eyeshadow blending brush, blend the eyeliner into a smoky cat eye that extends and tapers just slightly past the outer corner of your eyes.

Blend the liner onto the outer corner of the lower lashline and the inner corner of the eyes to make your eyes look bigger.

Try: YSL Beaute Eyeliner Effet Faux Cils, or Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, $40, from Bobbi Brown counters.

Step 6: Use a matte navy eyeshadow on the inner and outer corners of the eye and blend it towards and just under the eye socket.

Make sure the colour blends nicely with the eyeliner; but leave the middle of the lids free of navy eyeshadow for a bright metallic shade later.

For navy eyeshadow, try: Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Evidence, $30, from Sephora stores; or M.A.C Pro Longwear Eyeshadow in Thru The Night, $41, from M.A.C counters.

Step 7: Apply a layer of navy eyeshadow on top of the lined lower lashline and blend.

Repeat the step with black gel liner, and again with a bronze green eyeshadow.

For bronze-green eyeshadow, try: Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Intense Eyeshadow in Khaki Pulse, $41, from Level 1 DFS Galleria Scottswalk; or L'Oreal Color Infallible eyeshadow in Permanent Khaki, $14.90, from Watsons stores.

Step 8: Pick a bright metallic eyeshadow that matches your dress.

For example, peacock blue will look great with a black dress; and silver goes well with a red dress. Apply it on the middle of your lids.

Step 9: Finish the look with a bold lipstick and a light dusting of blusher on the cheeks.
