So what is the role of a WAG?
by Sazali Abdul Aziz and Aida Johan

So what is the role of a WAG,then?

"Basically to be there for your partner, whether they're feeling down or up," said Suzielya.

"For Shahdan, people always tell him he's so talented, but what they don't understand is how hard he's worked to get there.

"I've been with him since he was in the Under-16s, and I've seen so many sides of him. Sometimes I have to take on a motherly role, sometimes a friend's role and then a girlfriend's role."

Added Wardah: "After matches, Sufian will always ask if he did good or bad and my answer will be the same: 'Okay lah'.

"Just remember that you have to start positively because you have to encourage them especially when they are tired right after a game."

Apart from playing the role of Agony Aunt for their beaus, the WAGs also have to contend with their partners missing special occasions.

Said Suzielya: "Shahdan missed Hari Raya twice already.

"For birthdays, I've lost count. But if you're with someone who's always running around here and there, I guess it's expected."

The trio have become so mindful of their role as emotional pillars to the players that they even have their own pre-match habits.

"You have to make sure you never fight with them before a match," said Wardah, with a laugh.

"There was once Sufian and I had a misunderstanding before an away game and when he left, I felt so sad.

"To make it worse, he suffered an injury during the game... I felt so guilty. A part of me felt like it was my fault. So I learnt that whatever it is, even if I'm not happy, I'll just have to control myself."

Added Farhana: "If I don't wish Wan Shah before a match, I'll feel really bad because you are always afraid of what he's thinking during training, whether I spoiled his mood.

"That I believe is our primary role. To take care of their emotions off the pitch. So now, I never fail to wish him good luck."
