NANNING, China - The life of former Miss Chinatown Angie Cheong Wei Yee, who hails from Ipoh, has completely changed after she adopted a child with heart disease in Beijing six years ago.
Cheong, who was active in the Hong Kong entertainment industry in the 90s, said her eight-year-old son Hanson was the centre of her life.
"I met Hanson at an orphanage in Beijing in 2006 during the lowest point of my life. Hanson was staying with me while waiting for an American couple to adopt him," she said in an interview with China Press recently.
"But the couple gave up as they did not want to care for a child with heart disease so I adopted Hanson instead."
Cheong, who is managing dessert shops in China, said she now focused on Hanson and they led a simple life.
"I go to bed by 9pm as I have to prepare breakfast for him at 6am," she said, adding that it was unlike before when she would stay up late partying with friends.
Cheong, who is based in Nanning, China, said she wished to set up a school for orphans.
"If I do not get married, I want to be in charge of an orphanage so that I can stay with children," said Cheong, who is single currently.
