Tin Pei Ling donates Kate Spade bag for Aware auction

Tin Pei Ling has agreed to donate her famous Kate Spade bag to an Aware fundraiser.

This year's Aware's annual fundraising event, called the Supersonic Big Ball, will auction the bag on September 10 at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel.

Ms Tin said: "In the course of my work in the community, I have met many women, from single mothers to the elderly, who need help and support. I hope that the proceeds from this bag will help to sustain Aware's crisis Helpline, Sexual Assault Befrienders Service, Legal Clinic and counselling services for women. These are laudable efforts to help women in Singapore.

"This particular bag received much publicity during the last GE, and I hope to put it to good use. When Aware approached me and asked to put it up for auction, I saw this as an opportunity to raise funds for a very worthy cause."

Aware describes the infamous photo of Ms Tin posing with the Kate Spade box as being one of the defining images of last year's General Election which attracted "everything from criticism of her candidacy to misogynist vitriol".

The starting bid for the yellow handbag, which Ms Tin says she used only a few times, is $500.

Other items that will be auctioned during the fundraiser include jewellery from a local social enterprise, and artwork by a Singaporean artist.

Face it. The bag was an embarrassment to her. She was clever enough to trade the bad image for a good image through a worthy cause.

that will be coming from the reserves. you mean ministers dig into their pockets to give to the poor?
If she used the money to buy sacks of rice and give it to Orphange and Old Folks home, then she is worth saluting. But then, how many sacks of rice can you buy from the proceeds of a 2nd hand bag?

What is she going to do with the proceeds?

Why such a huge publicity over an MP using taxpayers money & resources to boast over a 2nd hand Kate Spade bag advertising over television, newspapers, internet, web etc?? Why she didnt use her $15K MP pay to buy new one and donate? Thousands of $$$$$ down the drain just to get some publicity stunt or garnering popularity votes for the next GE? What can a mere $500 do to improve the donation drive - does it justify such publicity or she got nothing to do or dont know what to do?? Worst she's representing the government as an MP and we find her behaviour atrocious & childish & yet the media has so much time & energy to advertise her for her self-benefit.
