Dressin' Up but going nowhere
by Jeanmarie Tan

Violet hair is a hundred times more acceptable than bright blue tresses, I'll give her that.

But whatever the dye job, US singer Katy Perry's fashion sense is lacking just that - sense.

Every event the 27-year-old chameleon has attended in the past two months was yet another opportunity to show us her identity crisis in its full, crazy glory.

Every pop princess worth her salt knows she has to keep her audience guessing what she'll wear next, but as of now, I'm just... confused.

Perry's most recent outfit at last week's MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Canada, for instance, caused quite a stir.

For the on-stage performance of her latest single, Wide Awake, she channelled a chrysalis by donning a sheer, custom-made glittering flesh-coloured illusion bodysuit encrusted with strategically-placed sparkly crystals - before she turned into a butterfly.

Did anyone inform her that Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez already did the whole bedazzled nude leotard thing eons ago?

Earlier on the MuchMusic Video Awards red carpet, it was a very different Perry in a dramatic black leather-and-chiffon halter gown with gold laser-cut breastplate from VAWK.

I wasn't sure if I was looking at Morticia Addams, Wonder Woman, an exotic jellyfish - or a mutated combination of all three.

For the City of Hope's Spirit of Life gala, Perry went back to the Roaring Twenties as a flapper in a nightie.

Unless she's off to a costume party or an audition for The Great Gatsby movie, there's no reason for such a literal interpretation.

There's the vintage peach satin and lace-trimmed slip dress by Nolan Miller, long pearl necklaces, jewelled headpiece over finger waves, a feather in lieu of a clutch white Manolo Blahnik crystal applique pumps.

Spare a thought for your D-cup rack and those thin spaghetti straps. Wear a bra, for goodness' sake!

Although Perry did provide her girls with support at the NARM Music Biz 2012 Awards last month, why show off the bra straps?

Especially when she wore a long-sleeve black striped maxi dress with sheer panels by Twenty Cluny, paired with Christian Louboutin pumps.

But what was more tragic was her faux goth vamp look, complete with uncharacteristic dark lips and raccoon eyes.

On her ever-evolving style, Perry told L'Uomo Vogue magazine: "If it is a 'mixture of many things' it is because I feel many different emotions at the same time, to the point where you feel you almost have a split personality."

Uh oh, should we have the psych ward on stand-by then?
