Very well Taylored
by Jeanmarie Tan

Any time you have something like the recent Billboard Music Awards red carpet, you can bet there'll be some hot messes that beg to be ripped apart.

But let's start with the winners of the night.

Country cutie Taylor Swift, 22, gets our "best dressed" award for stepping outside her comfort zone (read: sequins, curls and red lips).

The full blunt bangs and straightened hair really becomes her - as does the sexy yet sophisticated scarlet chiffon Elie Saab sleeveless gown with lace panel bodice.

While Swift enters adulthood, her country music compatriot Carrie Underwood seems to be reliving her teenage (fashion) dream.

The 29-year-old had a fairy tale princess moment in this frothy bluish grey Oscar de la Renta confection that seems more suited for a grander occasion.

The strapless bodice is tightly spun while the huge ballgown skirt comprises layers of tulle.

Some may get diabetes just by looking at this sugar overdose, but my inner Cinderella is L-O-V-I-N-G the whimsical beauty of it all.

Equally adorable are the Oscar de la Renta pearl-and-crystal embellished vanity case and silver open-toe heels.

And then there are the fiascos.

Singer Nelly Furtado, 33, bombs in an unflattering Alberta Ferretti white crocheted beaded dress that makes her look like a walking rectangle draped in fancy tablecloth.

She ruins it further with an overwhelming matchy-matchy choker necklace, gaudy earrings and nude Brian Atwood peep-toe pumps.

But it's the peekaboo black bra that delivers the death blow to any attempt at elegance Furtado was going for.

But the most questionable of the lot has to be pop star Miley Cyrus.

The 19-year-old proves she still can't be tamed in a slouchy white Jean Paul Gaultier double-breasted jacket paired with black and white striped Christian Louboutin ankle-strap sandals.

But uh-oh, somebody forgot the rest of her outfit - namely pants, shirt and bra.

Nowadays, not a red carpet goes by where we're not treated to Cyrus' bare sternum.

I'm all for a bit of bedhead, but she could not possibly look more trashy with such big hair and make-up that appears applied with a marker.

Cyrus is obviously trying too hard to get attention. But it's a no for me.
