Deals, steals and prizes for Mum
by Lisa Oon

Kids, tired of giving Mum something she doesn't really want or need on Mother's Day?

Direct her to Robinsons' new microsite, Make My Mother's Day (www.makemymothersday. com.sg), which lets her have a say in what you should get her as a gift on Sunday.

Introduced last Wednesday, the microsite requires mothers to log on to it and choose a few items from a catalogue.

They can then create a gift registry, and send the list to their children, who will have to go down to the store to purchase the gifts for their mothers. The microsite will be online until next Friday.

A spokesman for Robinsons said that the motivation behind the site is for every mother to have "a real smile on her face when she receives her desired gifts" and to spare family members "the frustration of guessing what Mum wants".

Ms Patricia Yeo, 47, a housewife with two children, browsed the new site and said that it is a refreshing idea.

"We get to choose what we want, in secret," she said.

Robinsons isn't the only shopping outlet trying to get the attention of mums and their kids who have dosh to spend. Some malls and brands have come up with contests to help shoppers celebrate the special day.

Facebook fans of Marks & Spencer (www.facebook.com/ singaporemarksandspencer) can click on the Garden of Love icon, which allows users to post Mother's Day messages for free.

This also gives participants a chance to win a Marks & Spencer hamper for their mums, worth $250. When the 1,000th post has been submitted, another hamper, worth $350, will be up for grabs.

Then, there's Clementi Mall, which asks its Facebook fans to share a photo of themselves with their mums, along with the reasons why their mother means the world to them.

This can be done on the Mother's Day Photo Contest page (www.facebook. com/theclementimall).

The submission with the most number of "likes" will walk away with $500 worth of Clementi Mall vouchers.

And Brand's is collaborating with 313@somerset in a photo and video contest.

Photos or videos can be uploaded on Brand's Bird's Nest Facebook page (www. facebook.com/brandsbirdsnest) and will be projected on Brand's Bird's Nest Amazing Video Wall at 313@somerset from now until next Sunday.

Ten lucky entrants will receive personalised Brand's Bird's Nest packs.

Twenty other winners will each receive $100 worth of Brand's Bird's Nest products.

Vote for your favourite photos or videos, and stand a chance to win a pack of Brand's Royal Superior Bird's Nest.

Five winners will be chosen per week, until next Sunday.

Frasers Centrepoint Malls has got in on the act, too, and has organised a mother-daughter lookalike contest.

The semi-finals will be held at Compass Point Level 1 Main Atrium on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.

A spokesman for Frasers Centrepoint Malls said that it organised the event so that "the participants may take this chance to strengthen their family bonds, as well as express their love for their mums".

The top prize is a three-night Penang/Phuket cruise, or a three- night Phuket/Langkawi cruise, on board the SuperStar Virgo for a family of four, and $500 in Metro shopping vouchers.
