Get sexy, the Lisa S way
by Josephine Price

MODEL and TV personality Lisa Selesner's beauty regime is fastidious, to put it lightly.

Monaco-born, Hong Kong- based Selesner - better known as Lisa S and who appears as a mentor in reality competition SuperModelMe - doesn't just treat her skin topically.

She and her husband, actor Daniel Wu, keep healthy by exercising three times a week. They also incorporate lots of brown rice and fish into their diet.

The effects are impressive. "Your immune system, your hair, your skin and even your sex drive, all improve," she told my paper in a recent interview.

Selesner will do pretty much anything to keep her skin clear. "I am, like, freaky deaky about this stuff," she said with a laugh, adding that, until a few years ago, she went so far as to wash her face with mineral water.

There's a reason she is so rigorous when it comes to her skin: She suffered from acne problems in her early 20s.

"Acne is just the most debilitating thing," she said.

Thankfully, popular American brand Proactiv - endorsed by the likes of Jessica Simpson and Katy Perry - changed her life. Selesner discovered it about 15 years ago when her mum called her at 3am one night after seeing an infomercial on the brand's three-step system.

Though it's "just a drugstore brand", Selesner swears by the award-winning product.

Of course, she also uses other "branded" products. "I am an absolute sucker for 'miracle' products," she said. For example, after learning that the Duchess of Cambridge, popularly known as Kate Middleton, uses Lancome's new serum, Visionnaire, she got herself a bottle.

The product is an advanced skin corrector that fixes wrinkles, large pores and uneven skin tone.

It's clear that Selesner will leave no stone unturned when it comes to beauty. She has even tried cosmetic surgery.

She revealed that she had surgery 11 years ago to remove fatty pockets under her eyes that always made her look tired.

And there are days when she wishes to be "a cup size bigger". For now, though, she has no plans for further surgery.

On her role as a mentor on SuperModelMe, Selesner is fully aware that she is a role model for the younger girls competing for the grand prize of $20,000.

The one thing she wants to pass on is: You are what you eat.

"It's not about being super-skinny. Just be healthy in the body that you have," she said.

RULE NO. 1:

Always wear sunscreen

"I don't care if you're in Alaska or Rio de Janeiro, you must use SPF every day, rain or shine," said Selesner.

Besides protecting you from sunburn, sunscreens also help to prevent skin damage from exposure to sun, such as premature ageing and pre-cancerous growth.

Try: Dermalogica's Solar Defense Booster ($120 for 50ml), formulated to be easily mixed into your moisturiser or make-up.

Buy: At AsterSpring Origin of Beauty centres (such as those in nex and HarbourFront Centre) and Dermalogica-authorised skin-care centres. For locations, visit www.dermalogica.com.sg

RULE NO. 2:

Moisturise

Given Singapore's climate, a light lotion in the day will suffice, but "a heavier cream at night is better to combat the effects of air-conditioning", said Selesner.

Try: Creme de la Mer's moisturiser ($249 for 30ml) at night for renewed, flawless and luminous skin.

Buy: At Creme de la Mer counters at Tangs Orchard, Takashimaya and Robinsons at The Centrepoint.

RULE NO. 3:

Indulge in a 'miracle' product

Selesner just can't resist trying out new products, especially those used by the rich and famous.

Try: Lancome's Visionnaire serum ($135 for 30ml). The Middleton sisters - Kate and Pippa - Emma Watson and Glee's Lea Michele are big fans.

Buy: At Lancome counters, Sephora stores and Lancome Beauty Institutes.

RULE NO. 4:

Keep your eyes smoky

If you have small eyes like Selesner, she advises against going overboard with crazy colours. Keep it simple with a sexy, smoky shade, she said.

Try: Opt for smoky shades of grey, black and midnight blue. Play with the look with Chanel's Les 4 Ombres palette ($87).

Buy: At Chanel beauty counters and Chanel beauty boutiques at ION Orchard and Marina Bay Sands.

RULE NO. 5:

Find the perfect concealer

A concealer that has staying power and won't clog pores is always in Selesner's beauty arsenal. "I am always on the hunt for the perfect concealer," she added.

Try: Cle de Peau's concealer stick ($116) to cover spots, freckles and dark circles. This cream cover-up, Selesner's current favourite, comes in four shades.

Buy: At the Cle de Peau counter at Tangs.

RULE NO. 6:

Combat acne with Proactiv

Selesner has been using Proactiv for over 15 years, after battling "debilitating" acne problems.

Try: Proactiv's three-step programme, which consists of a cleanser, a toner, and a repairing lotion, targets the root causes of acne to heal and soothe acne- prone skin. You'll find the 60-Day Proactiv Solution Set (it includes the must-try Refining Mask, which can be used overnight on spots) for $91.90.

Buy: At Watsons stores.

SuperModelMe Season 3 is airing on KIX (StarHub Channel 518) and KIX HD (SingTel mio TV Channel 54).
