Jamie Yeo set for radio comeback
by Victoria Barker

A familiar voice will soon be heard over the airwaves again, after a five-year absence from the radio industry.

Yes, Singapore deejay, host and actress Jamie Yeo is part of Power 98FM's newest line-up.

In its first major revamp in 18 years, the 24-hour Safra station will be relaunched on Monday.

Yeo will helm The Power Breakfast Show - on from 6am to 10am, Mondays through Fridays - along with deejays Hubert Tang and Sonja Steinmetz.

In a phone interview with my paper on Wednesday, the 34-year-old revealed that the decision to return to her radio roots took a lot of consideration.

"I've always loved radio because it's very fun, but now that I have a baby, she's my first love and my priority," she said.

"It was something I really had to think through and talk through with my husband."

Yeo, a former Star Blogger with citizen-journalism website Stomp, has been married to Briton Thorsten Nolte, 36, since 2010. Their daughter, Alysia, is 15 months old.

Still, the team behind Power 98's revamp, including programme consultant Shareen Wong, managed to convince her.

"I didn't think I would be able to make it to work by 6am every day, so I asked in a very jokey, cheeky way, 'Can I do 7am to 10am instead?," Yeo said, laughing.

"At any other station, that wouldn't fly, but they said 'yes'... They were very flexible and generous."

After finishing her last radio stint with MediaCorp station 98.7FM, Yeo turned to television, becoming the face of several ESPN Sports shows.

She left the channel to have Alysia, and co-owns marketing firm Upfront Media with Nolte, who is a Singapore permanent resident.

As for what listeners can expect from her newest venture, Yeo declined to go into too much detail.

"We want to be fun, yet not inane, or slapstick... We want to be different," she said.

And does former husband, Class 95FM's Glenn Ong, know that Yeo is making her on-air comeback?

After all, Power 98's line-up of deejays includes Elliot Danker, who is related to Jean Danker, the Class 95 deejay who is engaged to be married to Ong.

Yeo said she has not spoken to Ong about her new gig. The pair, who met when they were working at MediaCorp radio, were married for five years before splitting in 2009.

"People have this notion that we, like, talk," she said, sounding a little peeved that the issue was raised.

"You get into a relationship, it's the most intense thing in your life but, once it ends, you just move on... You have no reason to confide or talk to him, you know?"
