Eleventh heaven for couples tying the knot on rare date
by Yee Xiang Yun

JOHOR BARU - More than 1,000 couples nationwide have chosen the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 2011 to get married, the National Registration Department (NRD) said.

Department public relations officer Jainisah Mohd Noor said more than 700 couples were scheduled to register their marriages on 11.11.11, while the rest would register their marriages with various community associations.

"Due to the date's significant number, the day has become a big hit for young couples who want to get married.

"The state with the highest number of applications is Sabah with 117 couples, followed by Putra- jaya with 111 couples and Kuala Lumpur, which will see 100 couples getting married," she said yesterday, adding that 28 couples were expected to get married here tomorrow.

"We are also expecting more couples to register their unions with the various associations, churches and temples," Jainisah said.

She said Nov 11 was more popular than Oct 10 last year (10.10.10), on which 191 couples got married nationwide.

Meanwhile, the Johor Theng Chuan Tan Clan Association vice-president Tan Lian said the asso- ciation would hold a mass mar- riage registration and solemnisation ceremony at Dataran Bandaraya here tomorrow.

"Seventy couples have already booked to perform their registration on that day.

"It will be the first time the ceremony is held outdoors, which is intended to create a romantic atmosphere and also to give an opportunity for them to take more pictures for the big day," she added.

The Johor Baru Tiong Hua Association manager Eric Ku said the association received many enquiries from would-be couples for marriage registrations on Nov 11.

"We have more than 100 couples who are expected to register on that date.

"Some of them had even approached us as far back as May to book a place," he added.

Ku said he expected more couples to get married on Nov 20, due to the significance of the 20.11.2011 date, but concurred that Nov 11 was still the most popular date for marrying couples.
