Eager to revive a dying trade
by Cynthia Loh

If you have ever admired the couture creations of John Galliano or Rudolph Valentino, and never thought you would ever be able to own a piece of fashion's highest art, there's a Singapore version you can now turn to.

Local dress-makers and designers, Letitia Phay and Jade Swee, decided they were so much in love with the art of making a dress that they have started their own label offering you a chance to own an original creation.

The two met when they were both working in the same bridal studio, and decided to strike out on their own to try their hands at creating their own designs that were not the usual frothy bridal creations. While Jade has a design background, Letitia was solely motivated by her love for the craft of making a dress to join the industry after she graduated from school.

The results so far are two collections - with the current one inspired by the Chinese cheongsam and all things oriental. You'll see a dress that is shaped like a Chinese lantern, and fitted cheongsams which flatter the female form, as decorative techniques pop up in the most unusual of places.

There are three services to choose from: choose a design from their collection - the current is inspired by the ubiquitous cheongsam and the mood, very oriental, after which, the ladies will make the dress of your chosen design according to your measurement, a full customisation service where you can work with them on a design that you love, or a reconstruction service, where you allow them to breathe new life back into an old, but loved, dress or garment.

We're inspired by their current collection, and love the intricate details such as the beading, to the dressmaking techniques they emply. It is pretty clear that the ladies love what they do from the effort that goes into their final pieces, and we're looking forward to seeing more creations from them.

It costs $600 onwards for their bespoke services.
