Popularly known as the Prince of Prints, Williamson, 38, is loved for his bohemian world traveller meets girl-about-town aesthetic. The British designer counts celebrities including Sienna Miller and Jade Jagger as his friends and they are often seen wearing his pieces.
What is the inspiration behind your designs?
I designed the spring/summer 2010 collection for Atelier Swarovski with a view to complementing the themes I explored through my SS10 ready-to-wear garments.
This season, I was inspired by the work of artist Jim Lambie, whose masterly use of colour I greatly admire. I wanted to bring this aesthetic to the jewellery pieces through oversized bold Swarovski crystal elements within a geometric setting.
How is designing jewellery different from designing clothes?
In some ways, the process is very similar. I begin at the research stage with a kernel of inspiration which evolves into ideas. However, the way in which themes can be expressed varies widely due to the diversity in materials and techniques involved and this marks the difference between jewellery and garment design.
What aspect of your aesthetic has been conveyed through the jewellery?
My design aesthetic has always been firmly associated with bold colour and high glamour. This season's pieces embody these hallmarks. The Matthew Williamson girl is someone who is not afraid to wear statement pieces or express her personal style.
