Q I am attending a friend's party this month but there are scars on my legs. Is it a good idea to wear black stockings and a pair of boots with my cocktail dress?
A You are attending a party, not a rock concert, so I think it is best to leave the boots and stockings for another occasion.
To cover up your legs in a chic way, why not opt for a modern pant suit instead? After all, such suits are shaping up to be a big trend for fall/winter 2010, with brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Bottega Veneta and Alexander Wang offering sharp options.
To make a suit work as evening wear, remember to lose the dress shirt and opt for a simple U-neck tank top or T-shirt instead. Accessorise with a jewelled necklace, an evening clutch and high peep-toe heels.
To further avoid the corporate look, it is best not to wear a typical black blazer. Instead, consider opting for a blazer with embellishments. Cotton On, for example, has a silver sequinned blazer that is currently 50 per cent off, making it a pocket-friendly $35. You can also get a matching pair of embellished heels for a mere $15. Alternatively, Forever21 also has sequinned blazers at $59 each.
If you are not big on shimmer, Mango has white blazers (above) - another hot trend - at $119 each. Zara stocks pastel pink ones and cropped black versions for $129 each.
Well-cut trousers can be found at Zara, which offers skinny-cut options in an array of colours with interesting details like piping and trims. Prices start from $89.
Alternatively, you can pair your blazer with dark-hued skinny jeans for a casual-chic look. Topshop has these for under $100 each.
