4 in 10 male students fine with being househusbands

Four out of 10 male college students are willing to be househusbands if their wives earn enough, a campus survey showed Monday.

Of the 563 male students surveyed by the Yonsei Chunchu, a campus newspaper at Yonsei University, 37.1 percent said they would take full charge of housekeeping duties instead of their “well-paid” wives.

With 19.4 percent saying they had no idea, 43.5 percent responded “no” to the question, the survey found.

The newspaper also surveyed a total of 1,319 male and female students on marriage and sexual relations.

Asked about living with their significant other out of wedlock, 594 people (45 percent) agreed with the idea, while 453 (34.3 percent) said they did not.

Nearly half the respondents (49.2 percent) said they thought it was acceptable to have sexual relations before getting married, higher than the 30.4 percent who responded the opposite.

A majority of respondents (702) said they would get married, citing personal reasons such as “union with one person” and “emotional stability.”

The opinion of parents was still important in getting married, the survey found.

If their parents were opposed, 631 students (47.8 percent) responded that they would reconsider the marriage while 269 (20.4 percent) said they would marry as planned.

“(The survey result) is a paradox of today’s young people who put emphasis on gender equality and individual freedom while relying on family and parents at the same time,” said Kim Hyun-mi, professor of cultural anthropology at Yonsei University.

“With neoliberalism weakening the social safety net, youngsters don’t want to accept the thinking of the older generation while still being dependent on the financial stability of their parents.”
