She wanted to settle relationship problems
by Chong Shin Yen

She claimed that her Singaporean ex-boyfriend, 34, had asked to meet her in Geylang because she had earlier told him that she wanted to settle the “relationship problems between them”.

Miss Zheng said that she had broken up with him in August. But their meeting at Geylang Lorong 27 quickly escalated into a quarrel.

Miss Zheng said that while they were arguing, she picked up a durian husk lying by the roadside and flung it at her ex-boyfriend, who owns an Internet cafe.

It missed him as he ran back to his Mercedes-Benz and locked the door. Miss Zheng then kicked his door to get him to come out. She then broke the side-view mirror on the driver’s side.

Enraged, her ex-boyfriend emerged from the car, struck a gongfu pose, feet apart and fists clenched, and challenged her to a fight.

Before Miss Zheng could say anything, he punched and kicked her until she fell to her knees. He then locked her arms from behind. As she screamed in pain, he gave her a final flying kick, which knocked her flat.

Recalling the incident, Miss Zheng said that she had no chance to escape.

“I was screaming and yelling at him to let me go when he was punching me. But he locked my arms and I was unable to push him away.”

The fight ended when her ex-boyfriend called the police. She was then taken to Changi General Hospital where she received outpatient treatment.

Miss Zheng, who rents a room at a Geylang condominium, sprained her left wrist, which is now in a bandage. She also suffered bruises to her arms, thighs and at the back of her head during the attack.

Her three-year relationship with her ex-boyfriend had been a tumultuous one, Miss Zheng said.

They met when Miss Zheng, a Hubei native, came here to study in a private school about three years ago.

Her ex-boyfriend had told her then that he was separated from his wife and was in the process of settling their divorce.

Said Miss Zheng: “We got on fine at first but he had a foul temper and could get violent at times.

“He first hit me about six months into the relationship. Whenever I went against his wishes, he would slap or hit me.”

She claimed that her ex-boyfriend had laid hands on her about six or seven times, including the incident on Tuesday.

Miss Zheng added: “Whenever we fought, he would say that he was skilled in martial arts and warned me to be careful of angering him.

“But that incident on Tuesday was the worst, and it happened in full view of the public.”

She said that there were some passers-by at the time. Two of them tried to help her but were stopped by her ex-boyfriend.
