Get a colour fix with natural tea extracts
by Cynthia Loh

ENJOY is a semi-permanent hair dye from Italy, which uses organic tea extracts to give colour to hair and coverage for white roots. Its paraphenylenediamine-free formula also means that your scalp will not feel sensitivity during and after application, since this chemical may cause contact dermatitis.  This will be well-received by who have sensitive skin, yet need to cover their greys.

When I was invited to try the hair dye for myself at the Phyto Hair Spa in Wheelock Place, I admit I was interested in the promise that the dye used natural tea extracts to impart colour to my hair, as tea has anti-oxidant properties that can be beneficial to us. I've resisted dying my crop on a regular basis for the longest time - my last dye job was three years back - as I'm not a fan of ammonia, which is something this semi-permanent hair dye does not have. Also, having to put up with the pungent chemical odour that comes from permanent hair dyes is something I'd rather much avoid.

I chose to get a darker brown than my usual lighter shade. My first impression when it was applied by the stylist was how much the hair dye smelled like rich, black tea, which was considerably more pleasant to the olfactory senses than the distinct, cutting smell of ammonia that hits you with a permanent dye.

The colourist was applying it confidently to my scalp as well, since there's nothing in its formula to cause an adverse reaction in your scalp. And the anti-oxidant properties from organic tea extracts to help strengthen, nourish and soften hair gave me more ease of mind as well.

The dye is then left on for about 20 minutes, and you're left with a lovely, lingering smell of tea in your hair when its is finally rinsed it off your head.

One-and-a-half weeks on after my first application, I'm pleased to say that I haven't suffered overly much from any chemical fumes, and my hair does have more sheen, while the colour from the dye has pretty much stayed true to the original shade when it was first applied, although I shampoo everday. I don't have dry hair or an irritated scalp, even though I have continued using my normal brand of non-coloursafe hair shampoo, but has retained its softness coupled with a very natural looking shade of brown.

There are 29 shades of rich and intense colours, from natural shades, gold tones, reds and coppers to cocoa, sand and chocolate colours. Colours last from 4 to 8 weeks.
