Sofia Coppola, overly self-indulgent?
by Hong Xinyi

SOFIA COPPOLA, 38

Getting It: The youngest child and only daughter of Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola scored an internship with Chanel when she was just 15 and swiftly earned a reputation for effortless chic. Designer Marc Jacobs picked her as the face of one of his fragrances in 2002.

Her marriage to cult director Spike Jonze - which ended in 2003 - further marked her as one of the cool kids.

She also earned the respect of Hollywood when she turned to directing. Critically acclaimed films The Virgin Suicides (1999) and Lost In Translation (2003) showcased her dreamy, languid aesthetic and the latter landed her a Best Director Oscar nod, making her only the third female director to be nominated at the time.

Losing It:
Despite a great deal of buzz and promotional support from major fashion glossies like Vogue, her 2006 film Marie Antoinette tanked at the box office and was panned for being self-indulgent and emphasising style over substance. A range of frills-free bags she designed for Louis Vuitton in 2008 did not stir up much buzz either.

Other stars that seems to be losing it:
