Q: I am going to Canada in September for a student exchange programme. Where can I shop for affordable fall and winter clothes? I hear that winterwear may be cheaper in Canada, is that true?
A: That is probably true, simply because there will be more shops stocking a larger variety of winterwear in Canada than in sunny Singapore.
However, this is actually a pretty good time to get some fall/winter basics in Singapore, as many shops are now pushing their new spring/summer stock and getting rid of fall/winter clothes from the past season at discounted prices.
Besides trusty chilly-weather staples like sweaters and coats, you can also look out for garments in thicker materials like corduroy and velvet.
After all, it is better to arrive prepared for the cold than having to go shopping for winter gear while you shiver. Shopping under duress is also when bad purchasing decisions are made.
Check out high-street stores for bargains.
New Look's knitwear and outerwear like parkas and jackets (above right) are going for under $100, while a lot of Zara's knitwear is on sale for $29.90.
Uniqlo also has some great prices on winter gear, such as quilted bomber jackets for $29.90 and knitwear and coats from +J (by designer Jil Sander) for $79.90 and $59.90 respectively.
