Gifts of love for her
by MaryAnn Soh

For Valentine's Day this year, which falls on the same day as Chinese New Year, I have been tempted to give presents a miss. (We won't be celebrating Valentine's Day in a big way anyway - is my excuse.)

But I am reminded of the five love languages, a concept coined by writer Gary Chapman. For those who are unfamiliar, the love languages are actions carried out to express commitment and appreciation to a loved one through quality time, acts of service, encouragement, physical touch, and gifts.

Some say getting frivolous gifts are a pointless waste of time and resources. But we all like receiving presents, don't we?

For some of you, who have been married too long or feel Valentine's Day is just like any other day, or if you are cooking up excuses like me, I urge you not to give up on gift-giving, especially not on this year. You never know what a gift can do for the soul.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner and so many different gift offerings to choose from, we sift out the best limited edition items available at major stores so you don't have to go out of your way to find something novel for that very special someone (especially if you are doing some last minute shopping!)

Intimate needs

Girl of my dreams
Looking for something unique? The Aerofit Highs is suitable for the quirky fashionista or the sporty at heart. Available in both lilac and red candy colours, this pair of sneakers is designed with hearts embroidered on its tongue tag, and subtly embossed around the midfoot and heel areas. $129, from the Nike flagship store at Wisma Atria.

Woman of my life
The Affaire Discrete give you reason to be a little cheeky this Valentine's Day. The two piece lingerie set comes with a sheer tulle string and nipple tassels, adorned with detachable Swarovski crystallised elements and satin bows. $189, from Valisere at the ION Orchard boutique and major department stores.

Pleasure jewellery

Girl of my dreams
The Teddies & Hearts silver pendant is a sweetheart. Especially characterised by the large bow with diamonds, this is a sure winner for girls who are into adorable collectibles. Plus, it's a steal. $138, from Citigems.

Woman of my life
You might have to dig a little deeper into your pockets for this one but a happy wife makes for a happy life, don't you think? The Tiffany Hearts® collection offers the most emblematic of all Valentines with an elegant pendant and drop earrings in platinum and exquisite round diamonds. $1,650 for the pendant and $3,800 for the drop earrings.

The other charmer is the Jean Schlumberger Egg Pendant. The stately pink opal is "tied" like a present in ribbons of 18 karat gold. $1,810, from Tiffany & Co.

Beauty indulgences

Girl of my dreams
Romance your dream girl with this Ralph Lauren limited edition fragrance. The scent is clean and sprightly. Each bottle of Romance comes with a silver heart-shaped keepsake necklace that hangs from the bottle's neck. $149 for 100ml, from all major department stores.

Woman of my life
She's probably going to ask you if you'll still love her despite her growing fine lines. While you probably have an answer for this, why not provide her with a solution. The SK-II Facial Treatment Mask deepy hydrates skin and gives it a boost in hard-to reach-corners like the eyes and the mouth which are prone to skin ageing. The best seller is suitable for all skin types. $173 for a box of 10 mask sheets, from all SK-II counters.
