Not a good month to tie the knot

Many Chinese are avoiding marriage this coming month, when the Tiger takes over from the Ox in the zodiac.

Tiger in Cantonese word is ‘fu’ and it rhymes with another similar sounding Cantonese word which means bitter or hardships.

Therefore, the year of the tiger is associated with pain, poverty and suffering.

Thean Hou Temple Marriage Registration Department Officer Madam Chow said there are no plans for mass wedding on Feb 14 as it coincides with the first day in lunar calendar.

“Although many young couples do not mind getting married in the year of Tiger, the number of couples getting married are slightly less compared to the previous year,” she added.

“Thean Hou temple intends to organise a mass wedding on Oct 10 this year to take advantage of the auspicious date of 10-10-10. However, for 20-10-2010, the temple has not made any plans yet but there might be a mass wedding on that day,” she said.
