DIY Hair: Sweep up
by Karen Tee

SHUNJI MATSUO (top left), 59, owner of Shunji Matsuo Hair Studio 01-02 Wellington Building, 20 Bideford Road

BEFORE

The look: An elegant updo for a formal function

Level of difficulty: High

Time needed: 30 minutes

Suitable for: Long hair

Tools needed: Philips Multi-styler, $69.90, from Robinsons; L’Oreal Elnett hairspray, $10.50, from Guardian stores

1 Set hair in hot rollers 3cm in diameter for five minutes to give limp hair body. If you do not have hot rollers, which help to create waves in the hair close to the crown, a pair of tongs in a similar diameter will do as well. Remove rollers and spritz on hairspray to hold curls in place.

2 Using a fine-toothed comb, backcomb all the hair from the forehead to the top of the crown. To backcomb, hold hair upright and tease the comb towards the roots.

3 Separate a 5cm-wide section of hair at the base of one side of the nape. On the other side, create a side parting with the fringe. Gather the rest of the hair in a bunch, twist upwards and pin into the back of the head. Leave about 10cm of hair loose so that the strands cascade over the top of the head.

4 For added pizzazz, pin a floral ornament or fresh flowers above one ear.
