How to pull off a decent rocker look
by Hong Xinyi

Q: I am organising my company's dinner and dance and the theme is Rocker's Nite. I am clueless about telling my fellow accountants how to dress the part. Please give me some ideas.

A: I think you are giving yourself and your colleagues too little credit. Just because you guys are accountants doesn't mean you are clueless about fashion and it certainly doesn't mean you can't pull off a decent rocker look.

However, being cost-conscious is probably an occupational hazard, so here are a few cheap tips and tricks to going rock 'n' roll without breaking the bank.

The cheapest option is the emo or glam rocker look. Think drama mama types – like American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert (above) – who slick on eyeliner for that sultry androgynous vibe that has been helping rock stars look like sex gods since the days of David Bowie.

Simply jazz up any normal work suit with a T-shirt and sneakers and smear on a generous amount of eyeliner.

I recommend M.A.C’s Eye Kohl ($27), which is vivid in hue and glides on easily. Don’t worry about smudges for these will only make the rocker look even more convincing.

Another affordable option is the mod rocker look a la The Beatles. Again, any work suit will do for this.

Simply spring for a retro-looking skinny tie (try T.M. Lewin, prices start from $59). As for the hair, either blow-dry it into a mop top or slick it back for that square 1950s look.
