I REFER to the report, ”More Singaporeans open to dating foreigners” (my paper, November 30), which demonstrates how nationality and race are taking a back seat in relationships.

Dating, as well as matchmaking agencies, have been set up to cope with the phenomenon. But are these establishments really effective? Do they have what it takes to meet their clients’ needs?

I have read about some matchmaking agencies operating like maid agencies, which have videos and biodata of women from Vietnam, China and Myanmar. Whether a person finds satisfaction in using such services depends on the individual.

For instance, some are looking for a life partner, while others may be seeking a foreign wife solely to look after their elderly parents. Those in the latter group are bound to encounter marital woes later on.

To avoid such problems, those who use dating and matchmaking agencies should choose reputable ones which provide professional guidance and counselling.
