Recovery may take a few years
by Chong Shin Yen

IT’S likely that Madam Chan Hoong Choo, 41, will have to carry the scars of the horrific attack for the rest of her life.

And she will never forgive her husband’s mistress for what she did to her.

Madam Chan suffered burns to her face, scalp, body and limbs after Goh Gek Hwee, 36, poured hot oil over her.

The court heard that Madam Chan underwent multiple operations for excision of burn wounds and skin grafting.

She was hospitalised for a month, during which complications set in because of a wound infection.

Doctors have told her that the recovery process could take a few years.

Madam Chan quit her job because she can no longer work.

She told Shin Min Daily News that she could not bear to look at herself in the mirror after she woke up in hospital.

She said in Mandarin: “I mustered up my courage and the first time I saw myself, I thought I looked like a ghost.

“I cried myself to sleep every night and the pain was unbearable. But the doctors encouraged me to face up (to my injuries) bravely.”

Madam Chan has to wear compression garments daily to reduce the scarring.

The flesh on her face, body and limbs is still red and raw.

She said: “I refuse to leave the flat except to go to the hospital. “I’m afraid of people looking and pointing at me. The compression garment I wear over my head will also frighten others.”

Her husband, Mr Soo Kiong Sing, 46, said he takes her to the hospital two to three times a week. Each visit costs him $100 to $200.

Madam Chan also goes for physiotherapy regularly.

Recalling the incident, Madam Chan said: “Because of her, I’m now ‘imprisoned’ in my flat. Is she able to give me back my looks?

“She snatched my husband and did this to me. The hurt she has caused me will last forever. I will never forgive her.”
