Is Fann Wong pregnant?
by Kwok Kar Peng

IS FANN Wong pregnant?

We heard from a source that she was, so we had to find out.

There is also speculation on the MediaCorp TV forum that Fann had rejected a China movie because she’s pregnant.

After all, the local actress and her actor-husband Christopher Lee, both 38, had made no secret of their intention to procreate as soon as possible after their wedding banquet on 29 Sep.

Fann had told Shin Min Daily News that night that her most important task right now is to give Christopher a baby.

According to their “godmother”, celebrity hairstylist David Gan, she had even rejected an offer by a female Chinese tycoon to finance a movie for her because she wants to have a bun in the oven.

Two months have passed since. So what’s the latest?

The New Paper met the blissful newly weds on Thursday night at the grand opening of Bally’s flagship store at ION Orchard.

Observation #1: No visible baby bump, but some don’t show until the third month. Fann’s black pants aren’t too tight, just nice. And you know, safe for the baby, if there was one.

Observation #2: Fann wore only three-inch heels. Hmm, was it because she’s afraid of toppling over and injuring baby Christofann?

Time to grill the couple. So Christopher, is your wife pregnant?

No, he said flatly. And he promised to let me know once she’s expecting.

I pressed on. But you guys are vigorously trying for a baby, right?

He blinked a couple of times, apparently somewhat taken aback by the question.

Then he laughed. “Ha ha ha! Which couple doesn’t after marriage?”

He added that he’s been busy filming the sequel to his successful variety show Life Transformers, but conceded his nights are free.

Fann, however, will be flying off to Beijing in a few days’ time for a press conference to plug her Chinese drama The Last Night Of Madam Chin.

She will then return to Singapore and start work at the end of this month on a new local movie tentatively titled Lucky Star.

So he’s free at night while she’s busy all day, or at least will be busy soon.

Time to hear it from Mrs Lee herself.

We managed to inch away from Christopher and catch Fann’s attention. The two were practically inseparable for the entire duration of the event.

So, Fann, are you pregnant?

No surprises there. Her answer was the same as her hubby’s.

But could it be that she’s pregnant, just that it’s still too early to announce it? After all, superstition dictates that one shouldn’t reveal a pregnancy until it’s past the first trimester because it might be bad luck to do so.

Assuming that she really was pregnant, would Fann cover up because she’s pantang (superstitious)?

“I don’t know what I’ll do,” she said. “I might be so happy that I’ll let slip the good news before the first threemonths of pregnancy are over.”

No pressure

But you are trying hard to get pregnant, right? Fann was elusive on that.

“We don’t want to give each other too much pressure to have a baby, so we’ll shun qi zi ran (Mandarin for leave things to nature),” she said. Does that mean you are not using contraceptives? This time I got a laugh out of her.

“You’re a wife and mother too,” she said, “you should know what it means!”

Fann added that she had been hospitalised right after the wedding banquet in Singapore because of exhaustion.

She now wants to recuperate through exercise and more rest before trying for a baby.

If all works out well, they intend to have their honeymoon after January, perhaps in the Maldives.

Fann cheekily added: “David (Gan) told us that if I have sextuplets, he’ll move out of his condominium unit and let the children live there, ha ha! “Every time they want their mother, they can just walk down a few floors to look for me.”

David and Fann bought units in the same condo project in the Orchard Road area.

Fann said: “I used to wonder what our babies will look like. Maybe our son will look like me and our daughter like Christopher.

“And I think it’s terrifying that Christoper wants our children to do a lot of sports. It’s terrifying to me because not a lot of people are as into sports as he is. I’m not.”

She also told us proudly that she’s a lucky woman because Christopher has moved in to live with her and her parents in the Orchard Road condo unit.

The lovebirds, who looked at each other with goo-goo eyes ever so often, admitted that their dream is to buy a big house and invite both their families to live with them.

Fann added she’s very happy that Christopher calls her “lao po” (Mandarin for wife) every day.

He’s also more protective of her now. She on the other hand, calls him “lao gong” (Mandarin for husband).

Our photographer Jonathan Choo stepped forward. We asked Fann to strike a pose for us.

How about showing us with her fingers how many months she is pregnant, in this case, “0”?

“Don’t want lah, it’s so paiseh (Hokkien for embarrassing)!” she gasped, breaking into shy laughter.

She was adamant, but oh-so-nice about it with her helpless looks and giggles.

So we turned to Christopher. And he obliged, promptly flashing a “0” with his fingers.

Fann squealed and whispered in his ears.

Eh, what was that? Is there something we don’t know?

Fann cheekily turned to us and said: “I’ll pose for you when I’m pregnant”, as she counted the months, one, two, three,on her fingers.

In vino veritas

So, in the end we were not totally convinced. During the night, we had observed how Fann held onto a champagne glass, but never took a sip.

Pregnant women shouldn’t drink, right?

We trailed her and Christopher around the store, eyeing her surreptitiously as they stopped to chat with friends.

Was she avoiding alcohol? Was the champagne glass just for show?

Fann eventually raised the glass to her lips and took a small sip.

Did she know we were observing her?
