What happened to S'pore's beauty queens?

FIRST it was ex-Miss Singapore World 2009 Ris Low who gave up her throne over a credit card conviction.

Netizens were aghast with her command of English and some even commented on her lack of intelligence.

Now, they have turned on Low’s replacement Pilar Carmelita Arlando, with even harsher comments, saying that she has zero IQ!

Just as the 20-year-old diploma student was getting ready for the Miss World finals in South Africa, a video clip of her being interviewed by Razor TV caught the attention of the people.

She appeared to be ignorant over general issues pertaining to her country.

In the interview, Arlando – who is pursuing her Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management course – and a few other pageant contestants were asked to answer five questions pertaining to the country.

She got three correct, one of which was on her second attempt.

But what became the big joke was that she had thought that the Merlion had actually existed but became extinct in 1965, Sin Chew Daily reported.

“I have no idea. (laugh) Hmm ... Merlion ... 1965?” she answered.

In fact, the Merlion is just an imaginary creature created as a trademark for the Singapore Tourism Board.

Arlando also got the age of the republic wrong. When asked how old Singapore is this year, she answered: “Oh dear, 47... 48... 49?”

And she only managed to mention the name Yusof Ishak in her second attempts to answer the question: “Name Singapore’s first President.”

The beauty queen, however, is quite sensitive to the opening of a new shopping mall and the transportation route.

The two questions she got right were to name the shopping mall that had just opened and the MRT station near Raffles City.

Arlando, who had been one of the favourites to win the crown, only managed to become second runner-up.

She is, however, lucky as Low was forced to relinquish her crown while first runner-up Claire Lee had a chronic back problem.

I think it's time to give all the girls a break. Asiaone should find something else to write about.

You keep picking on one girl after another. After Pilar, who next? the 3rd runner up and then the 4th runner up? You cannot base a person's intelligence based on a Blurp from Razor TV. which most of the time the presenters and people being interviewed also speaks Bad English but act saintly.

If Razor TV blurps are being used to determine intelligence level of a Singaporean. Why do we go to NUS, NTU, SIM & SMU or any school? We just need to get yourself interviewed on Razor TV and answer 3 questions and we all will look intelligent and qualified.

Come on People. We are educated! To Asiaone and your journalists, please write more serious articles and stop chasing helpless .....

Singapore should just skip this contest for a couple of years. Our population figures just cannot cope with the number of talent contests, beauty contests, etc.

C'mon you guys, Ris should be allowed to retain her crown. ERM's pre-requisite does not require the participants to have good moral character.

However, she can't qualify for Miss Chinatown cos they do require participants to have good moral character.

Yup, Singapore women that are both smart and attractive shun beauty contests. Beauty contests today seem to only attract "less than can make it ladies." We should all cheer for local smart and attractive ladies that have moved away from beauty type events. It shows their maturity in our newly industrialized economy.

Both she and Ris Low are not studying at a poly, but a private school where bright people need not apply. Boomz!

Don't blame the beautiful ladies. Blame our education system. She is pursuing her Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management course in some Poly, which produce such student.
Blame those stu_pid judges, who put them out in the killing field.
