Block Party
by Diana Ong

It’s not just what sun protection you use, but how you use it and what you use with it.

Remember these pointers:

1. Use a sunblock with at least SP15. It can block 93.3 per cent of UVB rays – SPF8 only blocks 57.5 per cent of UVB rays.

2. All sun protection covers only 50 per cent of free radical damage. Use an antioxidant product beforehand for more protection.

3. Generally, the higher the SPF, the more chemicals the product has. The more frequently you use the product, the more it will lead to sensitized skin – rashes flaky skin and breakouts. Choose a sunscreen with physical blocks (such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) instead.

4. No matter how high the SPF is, all sunblocks last up to 80 minutes in water – some last only 40 minutes. Reapply often.

5. Removing sunblock is as important as putting it on. This prevents product build-up and clogging. Use a cleansing oil to remove water-resistant sunscreens.

Female recommends:

Eucerin Mattifying Sun Fluid SPF 50+, $39.90, has liquorice, the same antioxidant as some whitening skincare products.

Peter Thomas Roth Un-wrinkle Instant Mineral SPF30, $65, is a transparent matte powder that feels silky. From Sephora.

Lancaster Sun Sport Multi Protection Cream & Stick SPF30, $50, is a two-in-one – half roll-on stick and half cream sunblock. Both are fast-drying, offer hydration and have vitamin E.

Kiehl’s UV Protect Face & Body Sunscreen Spray SPF30, $45, is lightweight and non-greasy enough for kids. Once you’ve spread the whitish liquid, you won’t even feel it on skin.

MD Skincare’s Powerful Sun Protection SPF30 Sunscreen Packettes, $90 for a box of 60 sheets, come in individual packs no bigger than your palm. Each sheet has lipids to keep skin hydrated. It’s a bit greasy and feels heavy though. From Sephora.
