How to manage bangs?
by Hong Xinyi

Q My bangs almost reach my eyes. Sometimes I need to put them up but using headbands or bobby pins results in spiky ends atop my head. I know gels are a great way to keep bangs out of the way and looking sleek. What do you recommend?

A Celebrity hair stylist Shunji Matsuo commends this dedicated attention to your bangs.

'A good fringe not only gives structure to an individual's hairstyle but also makes a bold statement,' he says of the look.

However, he warns: 'It can either accentuate your style or make you seem like you are having a bad hair day. Therefore, it is important to maintain and style it.'

To avoid having to pin up your bangs, simply trim them shorter so you can have your hair out of your eyes, he suggests.

'Alternatively, a quick styling of your bangs will also help keep them out of your face,' he says. However, gel is not the best product to use for this, as 'it is too sticky and creates no volume for the fringe'.

Wax is a much better option, as it gives your bangs texture and shape without making them look crusty and flat. Try a lightweight option like Arimino Spice Wax ($25), which holds styles well but remains easy to wash off with shampoo.

Other styling options: Use a curling iron or hot roller to curl your bangs and finish with hair spray to give extra hold. This will keep them up all day, while leaving them neat and bouncy.
