What to wear to a Shakespearean-play themed party
by Hong XinYi

Q My friend has invited me to her wedding lunch and the theme is A Midsummer Night's Dream. I was thinking of wearing a toga dress but am not sure where to buy one. Can you help? Other suggestions on what else to wear are also welcome.

A I am glad to inform you that your toga instinct is an excellent one.

Not only does it have the requisite Greco-Roman associations that echo this Shakespeare play's various mythological references, it is also one of the hottest trends right now and can be easily recycled for non-wedding events.

You may want to check out Warehouse, where some knee-length, primary-coloured toga dresses are going for $133.

For other options, take a cue from the 1999 movie adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream that featured Michelle Pfeiffer dressed in various versions of sheer, shimmering fabric in her role as fairy queen Titania.

Blum has a couple of nude-coloured dresses, some with Greco-Romanesque draping details, that achieve a similar effect. These are priced from $169 to $188.

But the piece de resistance, my friend, the best frock I discovered while on the hunt for your wedding outfit, is a lovely, whimsical dress from Avana:j which is by French label Nice Things. It costs $189. With its charming print of woodland creatures, you will fit right in amid the Bard's world of naughty sprites and feuding fairies frolicking in an enchanted forest.
