Aware new guard can air views in media
by Mr Teo Kueh Liang

I READ with concern the report, “Aware old guard takes battle online” (read it here).

Religion should either be an individual’s concern or restricted to places of worship.

It should not be a factor in civil-society activities. Otherwise, the freedom and diversity of religious beliefs which prevail in Singapore might be compromised.

We cannot deny that homosexuals and lesbians exist in society.

Going by its statements, the old guard of the Association of Women for Action & Research (Aware) has chosen to acknowledge the existence of homosexuals and advocate the need to accommodate them, their views and their rights.

If the new executive-committee members of Aware do not agree with that stand, and the activities of the old guard, they have many avenues to express their discontent.

Firstly, the new Aware exco members should set up their own civil-society organisation to advance and promote their agenda, as they have the knowledge, exposure, ability and experience for such an endeavour.

Alternatively, Aware’s new leaders could air their concerns about the old guard’s position in the media, so that the public can see what they are trying to achieve, and compare their objectives with the old guard’s aims.
