How do I sharpen my communication skills?
by Hong Xinyi

Q: Whenever I go for functions or parties, I find it really hard to talk to people. I do try to make conversation but after five minutes, everyone just moves away to mingle with other people. How do I sharpen my communication skills?

A: Christine Sim, the director of training at corporate training firm First Consulting, said that half the battle is already lost if you enter the room dreading the impending small talk.

Instead, she advises that you approach such events exuding confidence because 'people are drawn to people who put out positive energy'.

There are simple ways to pull this off: Have a firm handshake, maintain eye contact and introduce yourself audibly and with thoughtful details like where you work and what you do.

Sim calls these 'anchors of attraction' that help to give you a 'personal branding'.

If you want to take courses, you can consider First Consulting's one-day workshops that train skills such as public speaking and networking, which cost from $300 to $600. One-on-one training sessions are also available, starting from about $250 an hour. Call 6222-8252 for inquiries.

Consultancy firm Imageworks Asia also offers networking workshops which start from $220 for a four-hour session. Check out www.imageworksasia.com for more details.

In the meantime, Imageworks' associate consultant Cecellia Telkes says awkward pauses are more easily filled if you are well-read. Even general knowledge of current events can help make a conversation more interesting.

Remember also to ask open-ended questions rather than questions that invite curt yes or no answers. Listen to responses carefully so you know where to take the conversation and remember - everyone else is probably just as nervous as you are, so try to relax and have a little fun.
