Summery alternatives to sandals
by Leslie Kay Lim

I don't like showing my toes. What are some summery alternatives to sandals?

There are plenty of summer-worthy shoe options for those averse to baring their toe cleavage. I would recommend going for shoes with elements such as rope, woven leather or cork, which all help to give off a summery, vacation vibe.

Espadrilles are great, timeless options for summer. Made of canvas uppers and rope soles, they are easy to slip on and off. Try a pair with a fun print such as this leopard version from Manebi ($219, from

If you are willing to be a bit more experimental, how about lace-up espadrilles like this pair from Soludos ($115, from The red stripes give it a fun, slightly preppy feel and the lace-up design means it will stay on more securely.

For more dressy espadrilles, pick a pair in a metallic colour like this gold Tory Burch number ($250, from 02-28 Wisma Atria).

The criss-cross straps add a nice feminine touch and the colour elevates it into a sleeker summertime choice.

Another great summer option is Mexican-style huaraches, which consist of woven braided leather. Take this pair from Ix Style ($145, from Rockstar by Soon Lee at 03-08 Orchard Cineleisure), for instance.

The slip-on shape of the shoe covers the toes but allows for plenty of ventilation too. The tan and beige colour combination makes it go with anything.

Cork is another material that exudes casual summer fun.

For a bit of height, you can wear cork wedges like this pair from Pedder Red ($220, from 03-04 Takashimaya Shopping Centre). The pump-like upper covers your toes but the stripe design imbues it with a casual, fun feel.
