"Market rate" guide for wedding helpers

What's the cost of helping?

We're often asked this question: how much is a couple supposed to give their helpers by way of a thank-you hongbao? The answer: It's relative. Some brides give more because they can afford to or because they want to, while others give a more modest sum or an amount that's the "market rate" given to helpers.

Here's a general guide:

  • Main wedding coordinator: $68 to $108
  • Maid-of-honour and best man: $68 to $88 each
  • Bridesmaids and groomsmen: $48 to $68 each (it's also customary to pay for your bridesmaids' outfit)
  • Flower girl and pageboy: $28 to $48 each. This includes the little boy who has to open the door for the bride.
  • Ushers: $18 to $28 each
  • Drivers: $48 to $68 each
  • Officiant or celebrant: $88 to $588
  • Hair and makeup artist: $108 to $308
  • Photographer / Videographer / Cameraman (only if these are not vendors for whose services you're paying for): $108 to $408
  • Confetti cleaner and any other miscellaneous helper: $18 to $28 each
