Second royal baby? It's too premature

Some New Zealand and UK papers were falling over themselves trying to break the news that Britain's Prince William and wife Kate Middleton might be expecting a second royal baby.

But they were left with egg on their face after the Duchess of Cambridge was spotted drinking several glasses of New Zealand wine at the Amisfield Winery in Queenstown. She had abstained from alcohol when she was pregnant with baby George.

The media frenzy had been based on a reported comment that Prince William made to Mrs Cynthia Read during the couple's visit to Cambridge on Friday.

She had crafted New Zealand's official gift to the royal couple - a lace shawl celebrating the arrival of their son, Prince George. Prince William had reportedly told Mrs Read: "You might have to make another one soon.''

Britain's Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, and Daily Star, along with local New Zealand papers reported that a second royal baby might be on his way.

Mrs Read told New Zealand's Otago Daily Times yesterday that the comment had been misreported and she had no plans to start work on a second royal shawl.

This article was published on April 14 in The New Paper.
