Articulate Brainy Confident

THEY are well-spoken, smart and self-assured.

Yes, the top three winners of the second my paper Executive Look contest have all the requisite attributes required of young Singapore executives to weather the economic storm.

Winner Evelyn Pang, 27, a scientific-affairs associate; first runner-up Meryl Koh, 25, a lawyer; and second runner-up Cai Suqi, 25, a senior marketing executive, stood out among the 19 finalists at the event held at VivoCity last Friday.

Human-resource experts and employers my paper spoke to said that eloquent, nimble-minded professionals will always come out on top.

Mr David Ang, executive director of Singapore Human Resources Institute, cites the ability to influence others, communication and relationship-building skills as traits young professionals should have, particularly in tough times.

“When you cultivate your personal abilities – such as leadership skills – along with technical knowledge of your profession, you can really make an impact in this difficult period,” he added.

Ms Patsy Loo, head of brand development for restaurant chains Din Tai Fung and Food Republic, said that “resilience, initiative, and a great attitude” are important qualities.

She said: “Those help not just the employee, but also the company get ahead in times of uncertainty.”

The six judges at the my paper Executive Look contest said the winners scored high marks for their confidence and poise.

“Those are the things that can help you move up,” said Executive Look judge Elisabeth Gwee, editor of Her World magazine.
