Sky-high ambitions
by Noor Ashikin Abdul Rahman

If at first you don't succeed, try again.

Vietnamese model-entrepreneur Jessica Minh Anh - who has made a name for herself in international fashion circles for staging fashion shows at unusual venues all over the world like the Grand Canyon Skywalk's circular glass platform bridge and Petronas Twin Towers' Skybridge - sure feels that way about our little red dot.

She has been eyeing Singapore as a potential venue to host one of her over-the-top extravaganzas since November 2012.

In fact, she was here twice in the last two years on a recce, visiting local tourist attractions like the Sands SkyPark Infinity Pool at Marina Bay Sands, Resorts World Sentosa's SEA Aquarium, the Helix Bridge and Sentosa.

She was in talks to carry out her plan last year at Gardens by the Bay's OCBC Skyway while weighing her options in Paris at the same time.

Some places involve longer planning time, Anh had said, and after careful consideration, she chose Paris over Singapore.

90M FLOATING CATWALK

So she returned to the Seine River in Paris for the second time since 2012 to hold the catwalk in May last year, transforming a glass boat into a 90m floating catwalk.

But Anh, who is in her late 20s, managed to return to Singapore this year to finally make her dream a reality.

For the first time, the Skyway will be transformed into a runway for her J Spring Fashion Show on March 5.

At 22m high and 128m long, it cannot compare to Grand Canyon Skywalk's circular glass platform bridge (1,200m above the Colorado River in the US) and the Petronas Twin Towers' Skybridge (175m above street level in Kuala Lumpur).

"It is not just the height and length, but it shows the beauty of the Gardens and Singapore's skyline as well... This is the only ideal catwalk to me," the Paris-based Anh told The New Paper on Tuesday at Pan Pacific Orchard, where she is staying during her time here while she prepares for the show.

Considerations like the temporary closure of the Skyway for the duration of the private VIP invite-only show and limiting the number of people up there to 50 were factored in before she was given the go-ahead by Gardens by the Bay.

"The event will add yet another dimension to the Gardens experience for local and international audiences," said Gardens by the Bay deputy chief executive officer Peggy Chong.

"We hope this unique concept of combining the traditional elements of a garden with a myriad of exciting and creative programming will further captivate visitors and enhance their experience of the Gardens."

FIRST EVENT AT SKYWAY

The J Spring Fashion Show will be the first event to take place at the Skyway.

Asked if there were any challenges unique to Singapore, Anh said without missing a beat: "Not really, just lots of sunscreen!"

When it comes to the weather, she said chances of rainfall here were much lower in March compared to other months.

Singapore is the second Asian country to host Anh's extreme fashion shows, which have also taken place at London's Tower Bridge (44m above the River Thames) in October 2011 and the Costa Atlantica cruise ship in Dubai in January last year.

The hour-long show in Singapore will feature a mix of haute couture pieces and high-end ready-to-wear collections from all over the world.

For the first time, a menswear collection will also be added.

A search for male models in the region will begin next month and 20 shortlisted models will have to walk down the Skyway on Feb 17 before the final eight are chosen for the actual day.

Looking ahead, Anh is eyeing the state of New York - not New York City, she emphasised - for her next show, as well as Brazil, Italy and France for future editions.

But do not even try to squeeze the exact location out of this former commercial model and founder of J Model Management. Her lips are sealed - at least until about a month before the actual show.

The mystery adds to the competitive edge, on top of the short amount of time for preparation, and needless to say, the out-of-this-world runway spots.

"Each of my shows are prepared in only two months, and we do three shows yearly. It is quite difficult for people to copy us because the minute they try, we have already done three more shows. We just work three to four times faster because it's a competitive industry that we want to lead in," Anh said.

She swears by the motto "nothing is impossible".

The Sahara desert, Mount Kinabalu or Niagara Falls? Not a problem for this visionary businesswoman.

"If it's a mountain, it must be the highest. Everything must be the best within its own kind. I think you need to be a little bit insane to come up with something good. You have to take risks and that makes life interesting," she said.

Past shows around the world

DUBAI

"It was one of my favourites. From the catwalk, you see Dubai's famous skyline and that is special." - Anh on what was touted the world's first sundeck catwalk on cruise ship Costa Atlantica in Dubai in January last year.

US

"When you walk, it feels like you're walking in heaven. I don't know what heaven looks like, but it should look like that. It feels like we were walking on clouds."

- Anh on her fashion show on the Grand Canyon Skywalk's circular glass platform bridge in November last year.

LONDON

"It was a narrow 3m-wide runway, with two rows of chairs on either side so the models walked down just a 1m-wide runway."

- Anh on her fashion show at the iconic Tower Bridge in London in October 2011.

KUALA LUMPUR

"I was very proud, to say the least. Before us, not a single chair was allowed on the bridge but we put 150."

- Anh on her fashion show at the Petronas Twin Towers' Skybridge in March 2012.
