Man who cheats divorcees meets his match

INDIA - A man who allegedly targeted divorcees registered on matrimonial website and swindled them of money finally found his match - in a woman who decided to check his mobile phone.

Rahul Patil, 28, who claimed to be a science graduate, was arrested on Sunday by Mumbai police for promising to marry a 32-year-old divorcee but later stole Rs75,000 (S$1,500), gold ornaments and a laptop from her, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The woman said Patil had contacted her through the matrimonial website on Nov 15. They fixed a date for a meeting.

"He told us he was an orphan. Soon, he gained the sympathy of my widowed mother and 25-year-old brother," the woman said.

She said Patil claimed that he was employed in a private company and was also a member of a political party. "He lived in my house for five days before setting the wedding date. He also convinced us to give him cash and jewellery as he was in urgent need of money to save his property."

Patil's fraud came to light on Dec 2 when the woman found several text messages on his mobile phone from women asking about the valuables he had taken after promising to marry them.
