Faye says she wanted divorce

Beijing - Pop superstar Faye Wong said she was the one who wanted an amicable split with businessman Li Yapeng, in a Weibo message rejecting a host of tabloid theories surrounding the divorce.

The post was sent out yesterday afternoon, after the latest stories about her plans to become a nun and following days of gossip about Li's unfaithfulness, Wong's failure to bear a son and her cool relationship with her former mother-in-law.

The 44-year-old singer wrote: "I wanted the divorce. No third party, no in-law discord, no financial issues involved, not a tragic melodrama. A peaceful break-up is another way to get along. To the children, we are still a family."

In a postscript, she added: "Will not be a nun."

She also reiterated that the couple's Smileangel Foundation in aid of children with cleft palates would continue.

Former actor Li, who turns 42 this month, responded on Weibo by addressing her as "my baby's mother". He said: "Love you forever!"

The former couple signed a divorce agreement last Friday and announced the end of their eight-year marriage soon afterwards.

They have a seven-year-old daughter. Wong also has a 16-year-old daughter by rock star Dou Wei.
