Why I switched to designing handbags
by Jocelyn Tan

Singapore - Handbag designer Allynna Chuah, 24, set up her label, Allynna, in June. Thanks to her focus on functionality, the Singapore-based designer is seeing sales growing in countries like Australia.

She will be launching her second collection next month.

You studied visual communication in the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. How did you make the leap into handbag design?

People seem to be surprised when they hear that I was a graphic designer.

I used to design jewellery and had taken a few courses, but there is something about handbags - the practicality and design possibilities - that intrigues me.

My new collection is inspired by geometric shapes. It is a little edgy, and slightly experimental.

Where do you see the brand going in the future?

It is a little too early to tell as I still have a lot to figure out about Allynna.com.

My focus now is the growth and stability of the handbag line.

I intend to diversify, possibly into baby clothing or men's T-shirts, in the future.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Self-doubt. It's amazing how many blogshops and Internet retailers there are out there, and it is tough (to stand out)!

Support from my parents always helps.

My mum tells me from time to time to take a step back, breathe, pray, think, and do what I feel is best at that moment. I do just that and it works every time.

To view Allynna bags, visit www.allynna.com. Prices range from $70 to $130.
