Should I pay attention to fashion trends?

Q: Should we follow trends as they are introduced each season, or can I dress the way I want regardless of what others say? In other words, can my personal style be the trend that never fades?

Let's say you love all things vintage. The sad truth is you can't be shod head to toe in all things grandmotherly, or you risk looking like you came from the wrong era.

Why not combine the season's trends to update your personal look?

If you are a basic jeans-and-t-shirt sort, you can always adapt some trends from the runway. Accessories such as necklaces and earrings are a great way to start getting trendy. This year, ethnic influences are spilling on to the runway, so you can always start with some large wooden bangles or a chunky wooden necklace.

Another big trend are architectural shapes. So get yourself some statement-making heels to pair with your daily ensemble. That way, you don't go over-the-top by being a hopeless trend follower.

Otherwise, combine and contrast. For example, your grandmother's pearls and a pretty vintage handbag will provide the right dose of femininity when paired with a sharply tailored shirt and pencil skirt combo.

Items you wear should complement everything else, not make you look out of touch.
