Sunblock creams that don't clog pores
by Gladys Chung

If you want a sunscreen that also conceals imperfections, a BB (blemish balm), CC (colour correction) cream or a foundation with sunscreen would be your best bet. The tinted creams hydrate, hide blemishes and offer anti-ageing benefits and sun protection.

Look out for oil-free and non-comedogenic formulas that are less likely to clog pores.

Try Laneige's best-selling BB Cushion ($59), which has a lightweight formula providing medium coverage while giving skin a healthy glow. With an SPF of 50+ PA+++, it also offers good sun protection.

Shu Uemura's Poreraser UV Under Base Mousse ($60) is another option. Light as foam, the formula provides SPF 35 PA+++ protection, absorbs sebum for shine control and smoothens the appearance of skin.

Or check out Malaysian brand Empro's Aqua BB Cream ($45, from Sasa stores), which comes with SPF 27 PA++ and is oil-free.

Another option is Maybelline's Pure Mineral BB Watergel ($19.90, available at Watsons and Guardian stores from next month). It is a lightweight tinted gel that offers SPF 30 PA+++ and hides imperfections.

To get clear skin, how you remove your make-up and sunscreen is crucial too. By cleaning your skin thoroughly, your pores will be less likely to clog up.

Make it a habit to double-cleanse your skin. First, wipe it clean with cotton pads soaked in a water-based cleanser or make-up remover oil. Then, wash your face with a gentle foaming cleanser.

These two steps ensure that you do not strip your skin of its natural oils while making sure it is squeaky clean. Follow these steps even when you are wearing just a thin layer of sunscreen.

For gentle cleansers or make-up removers, try: Bioderma's Sensibio H20 Micelle Solution Cleansing Water ($29.90 for 250ml, from Guardian stores); or Shu Uemura Fresh Pore Clarifying Gentle Cleansing Oil ($115).

For foaming cleansers, try: Hadatuko Cleansing Foam ($49, from Sasa stores such as 01-14 Wisma Atria); or Ettusais Foamy Rich Mousse ($32, from Ettusais counters such as at Level B1 Isetan Orchard or Level 1 BHG Bugis).
