Who can be the next Barbarella?

With Michelle Chong exiting The Noose after five seasons and with no return date in sight, who can take her place on the show?

Is there someone who can take over her iconic roles like Barbarella, Leticia and Lulu, or has the potential to create new characters that will become huge hits?

The New Paper sizes up several possible candidates.

Judee Tan

Known for: Playing North Korean correspondent Kim Bong Cha, a parody of North Korean news anchors, on The Noose.

Why her: The 31-year-old Fly Entertainment artiste and theatre actress is the only female cast member on the upcoming season of The Noose, and having been on it since 2011 makes her the frontrunner.

Why not: She already has her own breakout role on the show, and it is unlikely she will take over Chong's roles.

Oon Shu An

Known for: The lead actress of Incanto, the theatrical magic show production at Resorts World Sentosa, and a series of heartland roles in Random Island, a Channel 5 parody show by the team behind The Noose.

Why her: The 26-year-old Fly Entertainment artiste has played an HDB tai tai, a mother and an Ah Lian on Random Island, showing off her comedic chops.

Why not: Random Island, which started airing for eight episodes since last October, did not exactly take off the way The Noose did.

Selena Tan and Pam Oei

Known for: Their roles in the musical cabaret group Dim Sum Dollies. Their last show was in 2007 and their third member, Emma Yong, died of stomach cancer last May.

Why them: Tan, 41, and Oei, 40, are both veteran comediennes who have acted in theatre, television and film.

Why not: They have recently been busy with other work. Oei made her directorial debut last November with musical Hansel & Gretel, while Tan will be directing this year's National Day Parade.

You?

In the age of video bloggers and YouTube stars, perhaps viewers with a flair for comedy can be the next Barbarella.

Which is probably why Channel 5 has launched a "Are You Noose Enough?" contest on The Noose website.

The contest invites members of the public to record themselves on camera impersonating their favourite character from The Noose, or create a new character.

According to the website, contestants could find themselves "doing a cameo" on one of the episodes on the upcoming season or creating a new character for the show.
