1 Jennifer Lawrence, 22, at the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan 27
This was the moment that launched a thousand screenshots.
The Hunger Games star stunned many stars such as Australian-American actress Nicole Kidman and French actress Marion Cotillard when her midnight-blue Dior gown appeared to rip across her thighs when she made her way to the stage to accept her Best Actress trophy for the romantic comedy, Silver Linings Playbook. She smoothed her dress down when she realised she had revealed too much, but kept her cool.
Dior quickly set the record straight, explaining that the gown was not torn but tiered, so the sheer material in between was exposed when Lawrence lifted the dress to walk up the steps. Glad that was cleared up.
Verdict: The damage was not all that bad, since the shorter tier had a modest hemline. Besides, Lawrence's heartfelt and funny award acceptance speech later on overshadowed the embarrassing incident.
2 Sofia Vergara, 40, at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept 23
The Colombian screen siren's curves proved too much for her gown to handle at the Emmy Awards last year.
Her teal-coloured sequinned Zuhair Murad gown split at the back, revealing part of her derriere, just 20 minutes before she went on stage with the cast of hit TV show Modern Family to collect the Outstanding Comedy award.
The actress shared pictures of her fashion mishap on her Twitter page and made light of it with the caption, "Yes!!!! This happened 20min before we won!!!! Jajajajja. I luv my life!!!!", and thanked her wardrobe team for fixing the malfunction in time.
Verdict: Had Vergara not posted those photos, we would have been none the wiser. The photos seemed to be a way for the South American bombshell to flaunt her curvy bottom. Maybe her Emmy win put her in a euphoric mood, but we have never seen someone so pleased to experience a wardrobe malfunction.
3 Kim Kardashian, 32, at the Midori Makeover Parlour in Santa Monica on Sept 25
The reality TV star experienced a fashion emergency when her figure-hugging emerald green velvet Gucci dress burst open to expose her back and bra strap.
The curvaceous star was at Fred Segal Salon in Santa Monica to host a beauty event when she experienced her frock's fury.
Before she took to the red carpet, her mother-manager Kris Jenner swooped in to do damage control. But when Jenner was unable to fix the dress, Kardashian decided to power through the event instead, careful to face the cameras at all times.
Verdict: This is nothing a few bobby pins cannot fix. Or, in this case, keep your back to the wall. At least she kept the busted seam low-key, instead of tweeting about it, which seems to come as naturally as breathing to her.
4 Eva Longoria, 37, at the 70th Annual Golden Globes after-party on Jan 13
The former Desperate Housewives star fell out of her daring low-cut Emilio Pucci lace dress while walking the red carpet of the Golden Globes' after-party.
Longoria found herself caught in the long flowing frock and spilled out of the gaping neckline as she leaned over to untangle her Charlotte Olympia platform heels from the dress. She laughed it off later and continued posing for the cameras.
Verdict: With a dress like that, it is only a matter of time before you spill out of it. Longoria looked like a mess wrangling with her gown, but took it in her stride and maintained her poise thereafter.
5 Julianne Hough, 24, at the 70th Annual Golden Globes after-party on Jan 13
Longoria was not the only one to be red-faced during the Golden Globes after-party.
Hough apparently boogied a bit too hard and accidentally tore her dress. The pale pink figure-hugging gown ripped to reveal two long slits down her thighs.
She later posted a photo of herself in the damaged Jenny Packham gown on her Instagram account, along with the caption: "Ummm I think I may have danced too hard ... Eeek!!!!"
Verdict: After seeing her in the movie Footloose, it should come as no surprise that Hough can dance up a storm.
We are just sorry to see the beautiful dress torn. Good thing the damage to her modesty was not as great.
6 Taylor Swift, 23, at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Jan13
The multi Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter turned up in a plum-coloured backless Donna Karan Atelier gown, which the online film and TV database Internet Movie Database dubbed the "revenge dress" after her break-up with One Direction singer Harry Styles less than two weeks before the awards.
But revenge turned out to be not so sweet when she not only lost the award for Best Original Song to British crooner Adele, but also flashed a fraction of her stick-on bra while posing on the red carpet. Swift, however, appeared not to have noticed the fashion faux pas.
Verdict: If it is any consolation to Swift, at least she was wearing underwear. We were too busy trying to decide if the dress was a yay or nay to notice her bra.
7 Anne Hathaway, 30, at the Les Miserables premiere in New York City on Dec 10
Hathaway's Britney-esque flashing has become what American news website The Huffington Post dubbed the "now-infamous moment from the Hollywood Les Miserables premiere".
Before stepping onto the red carpet for the premiere, the star gave photographers an eyeful as she got out of her car, revealing that she had gone commando in a skin-tight black Tom Ford gown that was slashed to her thigh.
A mortified Hathaway later described the episode as "devastating".
Even at the recent 70th Annual Golden Globes, it seemed the incident remained on many people's minds. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as well as English comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who was one of the award presenters for the night, made digs at the Les Miserables star. Hathaway could only laugh along as she blushed.
Verdict: You know a wardrobe malfunction has got out of hand when people are still talking about it more than a month on. We certainly hope Hathaway remembers her knickers before getting out of the car next time. Or, if she must wear those skin-tight dresses, at least find a niftier way to slip out of a car.
8 Ellie Goulding, 26, at the London premiere of Les Miserables on Dec 5
The sheer trend rages on.
At the London premiere of Les Miserables, the English singer-songwriter stole the show from the stars of the movie, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried, when she bared more than was necessary in her sheer, backless floor-length gown.
As the cameras zoomed in on her, her black underwear was clearly visible - as was the absence of her bra. Goulding appeared oblivious though and posed gamely for the cameras.
Verdict: Black underwear and a white sheer dress, really? Also, we cannot help but wonder if her decision to go braless under something this see-through was a calculated move to grab eyeballs.
9 Nicole Scherzinger, 34, at the National Television Awards in London on Jan 23
The former Pussycat Doll singer is used to showing some skin, but even this was too much for her. In her sheer black Ossie Clark dress and under the camera flashes, the X Factor UK judge's chest upstaged her toned gams.
Fortunately, her modesty was preserved by strategically placed nipple covers, and she did not appear to notice the fashion faux pas until Irish broadcaster Eamonn Holmes informed her.
Verdict: Who knew you could go wrong even in black? We can only blame the camera flashes for thwarting Scherzinger's attempt to flaunt her pins.
10 Kristen Stewart, 22, at the Los Angeles premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 on Nov12
Last year was the Year of Sheer for Kristen Stewart.
Before donning that risque black Zuhair Murad lace jumpsuit at the London premiere of Breaking Dawn - Part2, the actress had slipped into this daring skin-coloured number by the same Lebanese designer at the Los Angeles premiere.
While autographing for fans on the red carpet, her nude-coloured underwear under the lace and sheer panelling of the dress was in plain view.
Verdict: A dress this sheer is a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. But Stewart would probably have preferred if people focused on that than her scandalous affair with director Rupert Sanders anyway.
