Those flying solo are looking to have a good time on V-Day

PETALING JAYA - Valentine's Day is best known as an occasion for cupid-struck couples to celebrate their love. But many singles are adamant to make the best of the day by spending it with their best friends and loved ones.

Recently single, Lina Sinclair will be spending Valentine's in a girls' night out.

"I am celebrating my independence. There is no reason why I should not have a good night out on Valentine's Day, even if I am currently not romantically involved," said the 21-year-old flight attendant.

Quality Assurance editor Chong Lee San believes that Valentine's Day is to be celebrated by all, not just those in relationships.

"My best friend and I are just using the day as an excuse to do something special, to spend quality time together doing something fun," said the 25-year-old.

Amy Chandran said celebrating Valentine's Day with friends as a single person was just as fun as commemorating the occasion as a couple.

"After all, it is about spending quality time with the ones you love," she added.

The 26-year-old scuba diving instructor is looking forward to the plans she had made with her close friends, which include catching up over a good dinner and watching a live jazz band.

A quick search on the Internet would suggest several activities singles could do on Valentine's Day.

Lifestyle web-magazine expatriatelifestyle.com suggests therapeutic painting sessions at The Tea Republic in KL, a long spa session or throwing a pot-luck party with friends and family.

Offering a "single's only" table, Huck's Cafe in KL is also among the many restaurants and cafes catering to those "flying solo" this year.

"There will be a Single Valentine's table. All singles can join other singles in one long table. In other words, you are meeting new friends. After dinner, you might not want to be single again," the cafe's founder Huck Seng said on Huck's Cafe's Facebook page.
