They married early
by Hoe Pei Shan

Financial constraints did not stop one couple from getting hitched six years ago.

Mr Andrew Tan knew he and his then girlfriend Eunice were right for each other so they decided to tie the knot when they were 25 and 23 respectively, and at the start of their careers.

Their action differs from what a majority of single Singaporeans indicated they would do in a survey. The findings, released earlier this week, revealed they would hold off marriage until they had saved enough money for a wedding or a new house.

Not for Mrs Tan, now 29 and a sales manager, who said: "We had already been dating for four years and knew we loved each other.

"When you're comfortable with the right person, that's all that matters."

The couple had met by chance on a bus heading to their neighbouring student hostels at the National University of Singapore.

She acknowledged financial considerations had surfaced when the likelihood of marriage arose, but they were not an obstacle. They ended up throwing a wedding banquet more than three years after getting married. It took them another year before they moved into their own home, a four-room flat in Paya Lebar.

Mrs Tan's husband is now a marketing manager and they have a year-old daughter. She said: "We didn't think that a spouse would be a hindrance to our careers. As spouses, we can grow together and support each other through the rest of our lives."
