K-Pop's scandalicious stars
by Tan Kee Yun and Kwok Kar Peng

These singing and dancing idols are so perfectly packaged, we sometimes wonder if they are real.

Well, doubt no more - they are indeed human beings capable of loving and even creating scandals.

Some of the stars of SM Entertainment, like Eunhyuk of Super Junior and Yoona and Jessica of Girls' Generation, are whipping up a storm internationally with rumours of intriguing romantic entanglements.

Still, we are sure they will receive lots of adoration when they perform here at the SMTown Live World Tour III concert on Nov 23 at The Float @ Marina Bay.

Besides these two superstar groups, Korean A-list personalities Kangta, BoA, TVXQ, SHINee, f(x) and EXO are also part of the line-up.

Yoona & Psy

Earlier this month, 22-year-old Yoona - the cutie pie of nine-member pop group Girls' Generation - found herself thrown into the spotlight when the Chinese media started running reports about her having an affair with chubby rapper Psy.

It wasn't just that the two seemed an odd couple. What made the allegations worse was the fact that the Gangnam Style sensation, 34, is a married man with twin daughters.

According to a magazine report, Yoona made the first move.

The two reportedly first met when Psy was helping out with the album production of another artiste. Yoona, sitting in a corner across the room, was "smitten by Psy's energy and ability to create a lively mood".

The sweet-faced singer-actress, who won rave reviews last year for her leading performance in drama series Love Rain, then took the initiative to organise another outing, after which the two allegedly began a six-month fling.

At a fashion event in Hong Kong on Nov 2, Yoona was quizzed by reporters about the alleged affair, but she declined to reply.

Both artistes' companies then sent out official statements dismissing the rumours.

Said Yoona's agency SM Entertainment: "These are nonsensical reports...We think it is quite regretful to hear."

YG Entertainment, which manages Psy, expressed similar sentiments, referring to the whole thing as "absurd" and "astonishing".

On popular K-pop entertainment sites allkpop.com and Soompi, fans of Yoona and Girls' Generation appear to find the whole thing amusing.

Many wrote "LOL", one called it "the funniest joke I've ever heard", another said it made him "want to laugh so hard", while others slammed it as "weird and nasty".

Eunhyuk & IU

Be careful with what you upload, especially if you are a K-pop idol.

Super Junior's Eunhyuk, 26, made headlines when 19-year-old Korean singer-actress IU accidentally uploaded an intimate photo of them on her Twitter account last Saturday.

They were sitting so close in the photo that their heads were touching.

It was taken down in about two minutes, but that was still two minutes too late.

Netizens and the media had a field day speculating on the photo, calling it a scandal.

Oh my gosh, she's wearing her pyjamas and is he shirtless?

Eunhyuk's management company, SM Entertainment, declined to comment.

Loen Entertainment, which manages IU, released a statement the same day saying the photo was taken in summer when IU was very ill and Eunhyuk had visited her at her home.

It said the photo was taken on a sofa.

The company added that Eunhyuk and IU have been close friends since her debut and he has even dined with her mother.

But many netizens are convinced the two are indeed dating, with IU suffering the brunt of some vicious comments.

Netizens called her names and added that she's faking her innocence.

According to HelloKpop.com, there was also an "I Hate IU" petition on iPetition.com, though it was later removed.

One netizen said on the Allkpop.com forum: "That picture she tweeted is a couple picture no matter how you look at it.

"I have many Asian friends and they are reserved. A girl just does not take a picture like that with her male friend, even if they're best friends.

"Especially not in pyjamas while he's leaning on her shoulder shirtless."

But other netizens said the two stars are entitled to date and fall in love and that people should just let them be.

Jessica & Taecyeon

Are they dating, or are they not?

Rumours of Girls' Generation's stylish porcelain beauty Jessica hooking up with boyband 2PM's hunky, muscular Taecyeon started circulating way back in 2010.

Netizens posted on forums that the two were often spotted "watching movies together".

A year later, paparazzi-like photographs were taken of them hanging out in a cafe in Tokyo late at night.

Dressed casually, the stars, both 23 now, had just wrapped up their respective promotional activities.

On a TV talkshow some time later, San Francisco-born Jessica stressed that she and Taecyeon are great buddies.

"He's a very close oppa (Korean for older brother) of mine...yes, we do meet alone," she said.

"We meet up very comfortably and we're not really conscious about what others think any more."

Statements issued by their artiste agencies, SMEntertainment, for Jessica, and JYP Entertainment, for Taecyeon, also reminded the media that the two are "close friends" and their being seen together should not be taken "the wrong way".

Then, two weeks ago, just when fans thought the buzz surrounding their rumoured relationship had died down, more pictures turned up.

A netizen on allkpop.com's forum posted what was said to be recent pictures of Jessica and Taecyeon.

The pictures show two people wearing caps and masks walking side by side, on the streets in South Korea.

So far, the response has been rather mixed.

While one of those commenting on the photos said "it really looks like them", others have remarked that the "guy is too short to be Taecyeon" and the girl in question resembles "Yuri (Jessica's fellow Girls' Generation bandmate) more than Jessica".

The artistes have not commented on this new wave of speculation.

In any case, here's wishing them an enduring friendship.
