How much is enough?
by Elizabeth Law and Audrey Tan

Just how much is enough?

Ms Renee Leung, founder of The Wedding Butler, said there is a simple formula to calculate the "market rate" for a hongbao.

"People usually look at where the wedding will be and how much the dinner would cost per person. You then add a bit more money to that price, depending on how close you are to the couple," she said.

The wedding hongbao market rate guide:

Raffles Hotel, The St Regis, The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, Capella Hotel: $200-$250

Marina Bay Sands Hotel: $160-$200

Hilton Hotel, Marriott Hotel, Resorts World Sentosa: $150-$200

Hotel Fort Canning, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, Grand Hyatt Singapore, Pan Pacific Singapore: $120-$150

Non-hotel restaurants: $100-$120

Buffet receptions (e.g. Burkill Hall): $80-$100

Prices are per person (Source: perfectweddings.sg and Ms Renee Leung)

Coming to your wedding dinner in itself is actually giving you or your parents (if they are their friends) face.
You should know that there are many invitees who are actually not interested in your wedding dinner at all. So for the wedding couples, please don't assume that people are that hardup.
Please invite carefully - don't just invite anybody to make your wedding/dinner look grand & at the guests' expense. If you cannot afford to hold a wedding dinner out of your own pocket, don't have one.

The couple should have a good guide or a gauge of how well-off their guests are, and their own expectation and budget of their celebration.

If a dinner table cost $200 - $250 (top end), of course the couple don't expect most guests to fork out that sum of money, so inevitably they will need to cover most of the costs, since they want a more lavish celebration.

My own wedding is at Goodwood Park Hotel in 2009, slightly more than $1200 / table. The angpaos ranged from $80 to $168.
The 'worst' guests are those that phoned you to say they are coming, but did not turned up, and did not give any angpaos.
One of them is my non-chinese friend, and the other is my fathers' friends. Shame on you, you cheapskates.

I don't need your angpaos and .....
