$5 million wedding for China's dive queen

SINGAPORE - China Olympics diver Guo Jingjing and her partner of eight years, Kenneth Fok Kai-kong, tied the knot today in the presence of family and friends.

The marriage registration took place at the Fok mansion in Hong Kong, and is said to be the prelude to a huge wedding celebration to be held over three days in various locations.

The groom is the son of Hong Kong tycoon Timothy Fok Tsun-Ting, and the eldest grandson of Fok Ying-tung.

Shin Min Daily News reported that the total cost of the wedding comes up to about HK$30 million (S$5 million), and is touted as the "wedding of the century".

The marriage registration was kept a private affair, with tents erected and curtains drawn to shield the ceremony from the media.

Members of the press camped outside the residence with ladders and boom trucks to get pictures of the ceremony.

The celebration will continue tomorrow with a banquet in Nansha, Guangzhou, the ancestral town of the Fok family.

According to China Daily, guests will be treated to an eight-course meal during the three-hour banquet, which will conclude with a firework show on the lawn.

The Chinese daily also reported that a scene from a James Bond movie will be mimicked during a segment of their wedding.

According to other media reports indicated that shark's fin, a traditional dish served at Chinese weddings, will not be served as Guo is an animal-rights activist.

The wedding celebration will wrap up the next day at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

Online sources also reported that Guo's former teammates Wu Minxia and Li Ting will be her bridesmaids during the celebration in Hong Kong. Fok's brothers, Eric Fok Kai-shan and Jeremy Fok Kai-yan, will be the best men.

The couple met in 2004, when Guo was competing at the Athens Olympics. Guo retired in 2011 after bagging four Olympic championship titles.
