Ahem, Michelle's outfit is a hit
by Yeoh Wee Teck

ALONG with many other netizens, I was glued to my computer last Wednesday night.

It was a live relay of US President Barack Obama's swearing-in ceremony, so thanks to modern technology, I was witness to this historic moment, while chatting on Facebook.

The occasion may have been grand but my burning question was: Who was Michelle Obama going to wear?

Her choice of outfits for the day was highly anticipated. After all, the First Lady is known for her style, and many fashion pundits had already proclaimed her the new Jackie O.

I was quivering with excitement and anticipation. And when I finally saw Michelle's frock, I felt a lump in my throat.

It wasn't my emotions overwhelming me. It was just that her phlegm-coloured dress made me want to clear my throat.

Even the huge bow on top of soul queen Aretha Franklin's head didn't distract me.

The dress - in a shade its designer Isabel Toledo called lemongrass-yellow - was made of Swiss wool lace and lined in French silk.

Toledo said: 'I wanted to pick a very optimistic colour that had sunshine.'

To me, it looks more like the shade you'll turn when you've had too many alcohol-fuelled late nights.

But it seems that I'm alone in my opinion.

Obamamania is sweeping the world and Michelle's part of it. That lemongrass-yellow dress is a hit. It seems that Michelle has the grace and elegance to make everything work (even a phlegm-coloured dress, apparently).

If you too want to embrace this yellow fever, go for it because yellow will work with our Asian skintones.

Fashion stylist and show producer Kovit Ang said: 'Tanned Asians love bright yellows, fairer ones can go for darker, mellow shades.'

Mr Ang suggests a way for you to introduce yellow into your colour scheme: Wear neon yellow leggings.

'It's vibrant and fun,' he said.

I suggest you keep it simple, and use the colour as an accent. I prefer buttery soft tones to the Donald Duck-esque ones.

Mustard, according to Mr Ang, was big last year and it works with most skin tones.

So if you're still holding on to your mustard coloured items, hold on to them longer.

And that will do two things: Celebrate Obamamania, while easing the stress on your wallet.

Welcome to the new world.

TRY OUT THESE YELLOW TOUCHES:

These feather earrings from Diva will always liven up a party outfit.

These are so cheap ($10), you can wear and throw them out when you tire of them without feeling the pinch.

Find Diva outlets at malls such as VivoCity and Marina Square.

When I walked into the Dorothy Perkins out at Bugis Junction, a field of yellow greeted me.

There was a butter yellow sweater ($36) and a light yellow blouse ($39) long enough to wear as a dress (if you're petite). I like the relaxed fit that is beginning to hit the international runways.

Get a yellow bag.

The Monika ($179.90, from March) by Nike is a roomy bag you can take anywhere.

There is a dual-zippered main compartment, smaller organisational compartments and a plush-lined pocket to keep jewelry safe from scratches.

If you are rewarding yourself, check out the nutbuck zipper clutch ($459) from alldressedup.

It is 100 per cent leather with shibori details.

Shibori is a Japanese term for dyeing cloth with a pattern. It's available at the alldressedup boutique at Paragon (#02-37).
