The 1980s

Former US child star Melissa Gilbert reportedly dated Cruise when she was 17. He was one of her many teen idol suitors, including Rob Lowe, John Cusack and Scott Baio.

Gilbert, now 48, married actor Bo Brinkman in 1988, but it didn't work out. Her second marriage to actor Bruce Boxleitner in 1995 ended in August last year, when she filed for divorce.

US actress Rebecca De Mornay hooked up with Cruise when she was in her early 20s after they met on teen comedy Risky Business (1983) where she played his sexy love interest. Reel life quickly became real as the couple made New York their home from 1983 to 1985.

De Mornay, 52, who was best known as the psycho nanny in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (1992), later married actor-producer Bruce Wagner in 1989. They parted a year later. Her subsequent marriage to actor Patrick O'Neal lasted six years and she's now single.

US actress Mimi Rogers married Cruise in 1987 when she was 31 and he was 24.

They split three years later. She supposedly introduced Cruise to the Church of Scientology - he is now the public face of Scientology, rumoured to be second-in-command in the church.

After Cruise, Rogers, 56, found her happy ending in 2003 with producer Chris Ciaffa, with whom she has two children.

The 1990s

Cruise was so captivated by his Australian co-star Nicole Kidman in Days Of Thunder (1990) that he proposed after a year of courtship - he was 28 and she was 23. The couple exchanged vows in 1990.

But their romance ended in 2001 when Cruise filed for divorce. Kidman, 45, found true love with Australian country musician Keith Urban. They have two children.

The 2000s

Cruise quickly found himself in another high-profile coupling, this time with his Vanilla Sky (2001) co-star Penelope Cruz when she was 27. He and the Spanish actress parted in 2004.

Cruz, now 38, then dated US actor Matthew McConaughey for over a year in 2005. She married Spanish actor Javier Bardem in 2010. They have a year-old son.

Cruise probably couldn't get enough of curvy Latinas, as he had a brief fling with Colombian actress Sofia Vergara after they met at a party in 2005 - she was 32. Vergara, 40, got engaged to long-time businessman boyfriend Nick Loeb last month.

After Vergara, Cruise publicly wooed US actress Katie Holmes in 2005.

TomKat immediately became a Hollywood sensation, with Cruise declaring his love for her on The Oprah Winfrey Show - cue the couch-jumping incident.

They married in 2006 - when he was 44 and she was 27 - at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy, in a lavish Scientology ceremony attended by many Hollywood stars.

Alas, he was unceremoniously dumped by wife No. 3 two months ago.

The 2010s and beyond

A pretty brunette called Yolanda Pecoraro, 27, is rumoured to be Cruise's rebound girl.

The relatively unknown US actress of Nicaraguan and Italian descent is said to be the perfect fit for Cruise as she's a devout Scientologist, reported The Huffington Post.

The pair allegedly first met at the opening of a new Scientology centre in Spain in 2004.
